Meowdoku
Meowdoku

There are no numbers on the board, only colored patches and a handful of cats that refuse to sit next to each other. Meowdoku is a free cat puzzle you play in your browser. You place one cat in every color, row and column of a grid, without letting any 2 cats touch.

Game Controls

  • Place a cat: DOUBLE CLICK or DOUBLE TAP
  • Rule out a cell: CLICK or TAP
  • Rule out several cells: DRAG or SWIPE
  • Get a hint: LAMP BUTTON

How It Works

Meowdoku gives you a square grid split into colored regions. The rules fit on one line: 1 cat per color, 1 cat per row and column, and cats cannot touch, not even diagonally. The puzzles have no numbers to fill in, so every move comes from reading the shapes of the regions and ruling cells out until only the safe spots remain.

You have 3 hearts per level. A cat placed on a wrong cell costs a heart and that cell is closed, and losing all 3 ends the level with a retry. The first levels start on a small 4x4 grid with a short tutorial, and the boards grow step by step up to 10x10. A lamp button gives hints that explain the next logical move, such as the last empty cell in a row.

  1. Look for the smallest color region on the board.
  2. Click cells that cannot hold a cat to mark them with an X.
  3. Double click the cell that must hold the cat for that region.
  4. Rule out the rest of that row, that column and the 8 cells around the cat.
  5. Repeat until every color, row and column has exactly 1 cat.
  6. Use the lamp button when you are stuck.

What Makes It Stand Out

  • Logic without numbers: The puzzles use colors and placement rules instead of digits, so nothing needs to be calculated.
  • Grids from 4x4 to 10x10: Early levels teach the rules on small boards before the larger grids arrive.
  • Hints that explain: Each hint shows the reason behind the move, which makes it a way to learn new techniques.
  • 3 hearts per level: Wrong cats are punished, but a single mistake does not end the puzzle.
  • A long run of levels: Levels come in a steady sequence, and a leaderboard ranks players by levels completed.

Getting Started

  • Start every Meowdoku board with the smallest region. A color with only 2 or 3 cells leaves very few places for its cat.
  • Mark X before you place a cat. Ruling out cells costs nothing, while a wrong cat costs a heart.
  • Clear the neighbors right away. After placing a cat, mark the 8 cells around it so you never place a second cat next to it.
  • Look for regions that fill one row. If a color sits entirely in one row, no other color can put its cat in that row.
  • Only double click when you are sure. Guessing is the fastest way to lose all 3 hearts.

Going Further

Meowdoku plays like the Queens puzzle and the classic Star Battle puzzle, and the same techniques carry over. Players often describe it as a cat sudoku, because the one per row and column rule works the same way, only with colors in place of numbers. The most useful one is spotting locked regions: when 2 colors fit only inside the same 2 rows, every other color must stay out of those rows. Bigger boards from 8x8 up to 10x10 rely on this kind of thinking far more than the early grids do. Hints are limited, so it pays to read the explanation each one gives and use that pattern later instead of reaching for the lamp again.

Mistakes Worth Avoiding

  • Placing cats on a hunch. A wrong cat costs a heart, and 3 wrong cats end the level.
  • Forgetting diagonal neighbors. Cats cannot touch at the corners either, which is the rule new players miss most.
  • Ignoring large regions. Big colors look harmless, but they often hold the clue that unlocks a row.
  • Skipping the X marks. Without them, it is easy to lose track of which cells are already ruled out.
  • Using hints on easy boards. Saving hints for the bigger grids makes the later levels much smoother.

Similar Puzzle Games

If placing pieces by pure logic was what kept you playing, Sudoku uses the same one per row and column idea with numbers on a 9x9 grid. Nonogram Daily fills a grid from row and column clues until a hidden picture appears. Minesweeper asks you to rule out dangerous cells from the clues around them before every click. More picks are in Puzzle Games.

Final Thoughts

The Meowdoku game turns a strict logic puzzle into something calm and friendly, with cats and colors in place of numbers. Playing Meowdoku online is a good fit for anyone who enjoys Sudoku or the Queens puzzle and wants a long run of levels. Players who prefer quick reflex games or puzzles with lots of guessing will find it too slow.
