No concealed tiles, no dragons, no tiles under other tiles. All tiles will show their faces and the only obstacle will be the timer. Kris Mahjong is a web-based timed mahjong connection game. To win the game you must remove all tiles by creating a continuous line using two identical food tiles connected with a line of two or fewer steps before the orange bar completely empties.

Key Controls

  • Use MOUSE and LEFT-CLICK

How It Works

Kris Mahjong is Shisen-Sho with a meal theme. The board consists of a flat grid of burgers, fries, cupcakes, eggs, fruits and veggies. Two identical tiles can only be removed if they are connected via a line passing through empty space with no more than two 90-degree angles. Tiles adjacent to one another also count. If two tiles are located directly opposite each other, they can still be connected as long as there is an unobstructed line around both tiles.

The orange bar along the right side of the screen represents the entire stress factor. The bar loses value every second, adding value to the bar with each successful match. Once either the bar is depleted of its remaining value or all tiles have been removed from the board, the round ends and a time bonus is added to the player’s total based upon the amount of unused time that remains.

Removing tiles by clearing the borders and adjacent tiles first helps create paths to the interior tiles. Removing the final pair of tiles before the bar is depleted provides players with the maximum possible time bonus.

Moving to a more challenging board, with more tiles and the same basic rule applies.

What Sets It Apart

  • 2 turns, not 1 turn. The connecting line can go over 2 corners and therefore can wrap around corners.
  • Time is the only currency used in the game. Each match adds seconds to the player’s available time and the time bonus awarded at the completion of a round is additional unused time.
  • There is no hint button. If a player cannot solve a puzzle after examining it, he/she should keep searching rather than guessing.
  • Characters replaced with food items. Most gamers find reading burgers, fries, and cupcakes easier than reading mahjong glyphs.
  • Original 2015 Flash Version. HTML5 Version Arrived in April 2017.
  • Separate Remastered Edition. Feig Ltd developed and released Kris Mahjong Remastered in December 2020 with new artwork and a “shuffle” button.

Getting Started

Players should clear the outer ring before attempting to access the middle section of the board. Kris Mahjong paths travel through empty space and since every border tile is empty at game start, outer tiles typically have an open path.

Examine potential matches by finding pairs that lie on the same row or column prior to checking diagonal matches. Creating a direct line, cost = 0 turns, is always allowed whenever a gap exists.

Play quickly during the initial rounds and carefully during later rounds. While each match returns seconds to the player’s available time, during earlier rounds speed is key to building enough of a buffer to allow for slower matching later in the game.

Instead of scanning individual cells in order to identify a potential match, scan by food type. Searching for all of the Fries tiles simultaneously is much faster than reading individual cells on the board.

Going Further

Achieving a high score in Kris Mahjong is accomplished by maximizing unused time, because every pair of tiles produces equal amounts of scoring and the time bonus for completing a level rewards players for time remaining on the bar. Match a pair that removes at least one blockage for multiple pairs when you eliminate a lane, because eliminating a blockage creates an accessible path for all pairs previously blocked by that lane. When a tile is surrounded on all four sides, there is no pathway until that surrounding area is eliminated and there is no shuffle button, therefore players will lose that level when all of the remaining pairs are blocked.

While thinking about a move, time continues to drain from the bar. Making a mistake such as clicking incorrectly costs nothing, however losing time due to indecision will cost you greatly.

Bad Mistakes

  • Playing at a slow pace while there is plenty of time remaining on the bar. Speedy play in early rounds builds up the reserve needed for slow matches toward the end of the game.
  • Boxing in 1 pair of tiles. Without any assistance from either a shuffle button or a hint button, if one pair of tiles is completely inaccessible at game end, players will lose that level.
  • Thinking about making a perfect match while time continues to drain from the bar. While you are deciding where to put your next match, time continues to drain from the bar. A match that lies immediately adjacent to your current selection will help add time back to your bar.
  • Expecting traditional mahjong stacking rules. Since nothing is obscured except for the path between 2 tiles.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is Kris Mahjong?

Kris Mahjong is a timed mahjong connect game created by Azerion and played on agame.com. Players attempt to clear a board consisting of various types of food tiles by pairing identical tiles together using lines connecting those tiles in 2 steps or less before an orange bar completes draining.

  2. How do you play Kris Mahjong?

Select one tile; then click on an identical tile that lies directly above, below, to the left or right of selected tile that lies within 2 moves, steps, including bending around corners. Each successful match adds seconds back onto your timer and removing all tiles before your bar drains earns you additional seconds as a bonus.

  3. Is Kris Mahjong similar to mahjong solitaire?

Yes and No. Both games use similar rules to create connections between tiles, in this case food. However Kris Mahjong has a single layer flat playing surface whereas mahjong solitaire has layered surfaces.

  4. Are there hints or a shuffle function in Kris Mahjong?

No and Yes, depending on which version. The original Kris Mahjong has neither hint nor shuffle buttons; Kris Mahjong Remastered has both features.

  5. How does timing affect gameplay in Kris Mahjong?

The orange bar visible on top of right hand portion of Kris Mahjong boards continually depletes as long as you continue playing. Successful matches will replenish portions of your bar; when either your bar is depleted or all food tiles have been removed from your board, your round ends and any unused time will be rewarded as points at the conclusion of your round.

  6. How do you earn points in Kris Mahjong?

Points are earned for each pair of successfully paired tiles, 1 point per pair. Additionally points are earned based on any unused time remaining on your timer when you complete each round, 10 points.

Similar Matching Games

If the path rule was the fun part, Mahjong Connect uses the same 2-turn line across 12 levels, with a limited hint Kris Mahjong never offers. For the same linking with less pressure, Mahjong Link keeps the corridor logic on a board that tightens as pairs vanish. For the stacked version the name suggests, Mahjong Solitaire lays out 144 tiles in turtle, pyramid and dragon shapes with unlimited hints and no clock. More in Matching Games.
