Color Block Jam fills a small board with blocks in different colors and shapes, with gates placed along the edges. A block leaves the board only through a gate of the same color, and it can only slide where there is room, so other blocks often have to move first. Many levels run on a timer, and some count your moves instead. If time or moves run out, a second chance adds 20 seconds or 1 extra move.

As you progress, the game unlocks 11 new mechanics one at a time, including arrow blocks that slide only one way, layered blocks, hidden blocks, chained and sticky blocks, rope blocks, dark blocks, wood on blocks, color cells and hidden gates. Levels marked HARD or VERY HARD go further: gates open and close each time a block leaves, and some boards carry a bomb that has to be defused before the clock reaches zero.
