Classic, yet modern; this type of game is the best of both worlds. I've always been a fan of the original. In Canyon Defense, you will have a peaceful village located at the end of a long canyon. As enemy forces arrive at the bottom of the canyon, you will be responsible for placing rocks strategically along the path leading up to the village to create a defensive barrier. Before each battle, study what's coming next and position the correct amount of towers, in order to prevent enemy vehicles and other items from making it past your defense line. Planning ahead will help you get better equipment and support structures that were previously unavailable.

Overview
Canyon Defense is a classic, first-person tower-defense experience focused on preparing for waves and strategically placing towers. The control panel gives you information about the upcoming enemy force, how much money you have left, how many lives you have remaining, and which technologies you currently have access to. The automatic target acquisition feature on towers means that if there are enemies within their range, they will fire on those enemies. However, each type of tower was designed for a particular purpose (e.g., ground-turrets can't shoot down airplanes). Therefore, to effectively defend yourself against both land-based and aerial threats, you need to create a balanced defensive layout that includes both anti-land based and anti-aerial coverage.
Unlike most current defense games, progress in Canyon Defense does not occur via sequential upgrades of individual towers. Rather, unlocking new technology occurs when you complete objectives on the battlefield, i.e., Building a sufficient number of towers, killing airborne enemies, conserving money or creating support structures. New technologies include such weapons as Howitzers, tesla towers, Gatling Lasers, goo cannons, chain guns, gauss cannons and the nullificator.
You will encounter Three different canyon maps, as well as Three levels of difficulty (easy with 30 attacks, Normal with 40 attacks and hard with 50 attacks spaced closer together). Additionally, there are several support structures available to increase the level of strategy involved. The Recycler increases the rate at which money flows into your account. the Radar Dome provides additional damage output to your towers and extends the range of their targeting capabilities. Your nuclear silo, wall factory and laboratory allow you to construct more advanced emergency tools to help you fight off the last few waves.

Basic controls:
The basic controls used in Canyon Defense are simple. You can click anywhere in the window to select a spot to build a tower. To move a tower back-and-forth between two locations, just hold down the mouse button and drag it. For the rest of your actions, look for context-sensitive buttons that pop-up when necessary (i.e., selecting whether to upgrade a unit).
Beginner’s tips
- Look at the next wave display before spending your money.
- Build an anti-aircraft gun early on in case flying enemies want to travel down the middle of the road.
- Position your towers near curves in the road since those positions will keep enemies in view longer.
- Leave some money available so that you don’t overbuild your entire layout at once.
More Advanced Tips
- Place your goo cannons near areas where enemies tend to bunch together in order to slow them down.
- Construct the Recycler early on after checking your map to make sure it's safe to spend your money doing so.
- Utilize the nullificator to neutralize enemies with shields that can heal themselves or those traveling fast.
- Save missile strikes and time stops for waves where your primary defense line gets broken.
Mistakes that many people make
- Only purchasing ground-based towers and neglecting your anti-air capability until it is too late.
- Placing your towers in areas where enemies quickly move out-of-range.
- Not paying attention to what technologies can be unlocked by completing objectives during a match – assuming that new towers will automatically become available after previous ones have reached maximum power.
- Over-spending on support structures before developing enough direct firepower.

Final thoughts
While there may be some variation from one wave to another, Canyon Defense continues to remain fun because each wave represents a test of how well you prepared versus relying solely upon luck. With separate defenses needed for ground units and aerial units, quest-based unlocks of new technologies, support structures to aid in increasing your revenue stream and providing temporary assistance during key moments in battles; Canyon Defense is a great option for fans of classic tower-defense games featuring obvious objectives with growing trees of technology.
